Onsen Loving Snow Monkeys of Jigokudani | Nagano Travel Guide | Budget DIY Day Trip
Watching the snow monkeys of Jigokudani enjoying their onsen (volcanic hot spring) in the Nagano Prefecture is one of the most unique sights in the world. In this video, I will show you how you can make this day trip entirely on your own using public transport at minimal cost.
Jigokudani, literally Hell’s Valley, is located about 2 hours away from central Nagano and can be found covered deep in snow every winter. The troop of 150 Japanese macaques that live in this valley are masters of surviving in the cold, but they’re also not above enjoying a nice and hot bath, just like us humans! Inside the Snow Monkey Park the staff has built a special onsen just for them, so while we brave the freezing temperature they can relax in their hot spring. While here, we can also watch these beautiful creatures play, fight and eat in their natural habitat.
How to get to Jigokudani / Snow Monkey Park
First, buy the 2 days Snow Monkey Pass from Nagano Station for ¥3,600. Then using this pass there are two ways to get there by public transport:
1. Catch the train to Yudanaka Station on the Nagano-Dentetsu Line, then transfer to a local bus to the Snow Monkey Park
2. Take the express direct bus from Nagano Station to the Snow Monkey Park
With either option, you’ll then have to walk about 15 mins from the bus stop to the entrance of the Snow Monkey Park. From the entrance, it is a further 30-45 mins walk to the onsen where the snow monkeys gather.
