Norman’s New Orleans and Environs: Containing a Brief Historical Sketch of the Territory and State of Louisiana, and the City of New Orleans, from the Earliest Period to the Present Time. Presenting a Complete Guide to All Subjects of General Intertest in the Southern Metropolis. With a Direct and Improved Plan of the City Pictorial Illustrations of the Public Buildings, Etc.
Published 1845, New Orleans (NY), by B.M. Norman.
223 pages counting the extensive detailed 17 pp. index. Text in English. Steel engraved frontis. Well illustrated throughout. Publisher’s catalog at rear.
A fairly scarce early guidebook to this southern city, with a full page city plan, another full page map, and numerous small vignette woodcuts of key buildings and sights.
Publisher’s cloth binding, gilt title lettering. With a crude early cloth spine repair.
Book is physically old and shows clear signs of handling and time. Book is not new or in “new” condition.
Binding well rubbed and age worn, underboard exposed at lower right corner of front cover, crude but effective old cloth repair to spine to keep covers attached, remains overall attractive as an object.
Text block paper is gently toned, light to moderate scattered age spotting, some scattered spotting and soiling, edge of title page chipped with old tape reinforcements on reverse, internally still sound.
Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
